Yep, I thought this one through on a humid and hot two hour bike session. So much for analyzing my watts. Now I compile blog posts. But I digress! Every office has some sort of politics which need to be navigated from time to time. I've been fortunate to live, survive and thrive through some pretty serious, dangerous, stressful situations and I say fortunate becuase there were some great takeaways and learnings in the end. Although they weren't pleasant to live through they did teach me some valuable lessons and help me in my future roles.
Most office drama has one thing in common: ego. Being able to recognize when your ego is talking or affected is essential to resolving issues. It's very hard for most people but if you can teach yourself to detach and remove your ego from the situation allowing for the focus to be on the good of the team then you're more likely to have a positive outcome. This is not easy but you can train yourself to do this by applying detachment in small situations then a bit larger ones and step by step you'll be more comfortable detaching.
Here are five more tips I've found will help as well. These are in no particular order and again the principle of applying them in minor situations first, learning from whatever that outcome is then taken on to bigger issues is a good SOP.
Communicate Openly and Transparently: Whenever you can, foster an environment where open communication is encouraged. Address conflicts and misunderstandings directly with the involved parties, and ensure that everyone’s perspectives are heard. Take a beat, a pause and let others speak while you gather your thoughts. Being clear and transparent can help reduce the spread of misinformation and prevent small issues from escalating.
Build Positive Relationships: SO IMPORTANT! Invest time in building strong, respectful relationships with your colleagues. Understanding their motivations and goals can help you collaborate more effectively and reduce the chances of misunderstandings or conflicts. Show genuine interest in their work and achievements. This will pay off big time!
Stay Neutral and Professional: Avoid getting caught up in office gossip or taking sides in conflicts. Maintaining a neutral stance and focusing on your own work can help you steer clear of political maneuvering. Your professionalism will often earn you respect and credibility.
Address Issues Early: Don’t let problems fester. If you sense tension or conflict brewing, address it promptly. Simple but not easy. This worked so well about three years ago and I use this case study to this day! Early intervention can prevent issues from escalating and can demonstrate your commitment to a harmonious work environment.
Seek Guidance and Support: If you’re struggling with office politics, consider seeking advice from a trusted mentor, manager, or HR professional. They can offer guidance on how to navigate the situation and provide support if you’re dealing with particularly challenging dynamics.
